People have been cleaning for thousands of years. In the past, before the invention of the vacuum cleaner (or even before the invention of the floor!), this was much more difficult. When warmer temperatures finally arrive, many homeowners and apartment dwellers will have an almost irresistible desire to purify. We start emptying out closets and garages, throwing out items we no longer need, and working to get dust out from under furniture so we can bring order and cleanliness to our lives again.
Vacuuming Floors and Carpets
Without a doubt, the main function of a vacuum cleaner is to suck up dirt from floors and carpets. Instead of vacuuming, we can sweep or dry bare floors like wood, tile or linoleum, but this method tends to just pick up the dust and disperse it. Sweeping may bring you a pile of debris, but the smaller, lighter dust particles on the floor are simply transferred elsewhere. Vacuuming is cleaner and more efficient.
However, for carpets, a vacuum cleaner is an essential tool. Before the invention of the vacuum cleaner, people used carpet sweepers to clean carpets, or took them outside and hung them with a carpet beater to knock out the dust. (You can still get these at places like Ikea, but they're mostly just cosmetic.)
Carpet sweepers have a brush that spins as you push the sweeper to push dirt into the compartment. Today's vacuum cleaners have a similar section we call the stir stick. However, this rod is driven by a motor. The biggest difference is that vacuums can vacuum, while carpet sweepers can't.
However, when it comes to spring cleaning, a vacuum does much more than clean floors and carpets!

Most vacuums come with a handy set of accessories for cleaning other parts of your home besides floors and carpets. One of the most commonly used accessories are decorative accessories. This tool is great for vacuuming sofas and chair cushions. Once you pull these pads off the furniture to clean them, you may see all sorts of debris fall off, like crumbs, dirt, hair, etc.
Sometimes the tool has a detachable bristle brush, but sometimes the brush is a separate tool. If you have pets, the bristles are especially helpful in pulling pet hair off the mat.

You can also use upholstery accessories to vacuum curtains and drapes.
Curtains and drapes can collect a lot of dust, pet hair and pollen. One reason is because they are right next to an open window. But we also tend to clean this part of our home infrequently, so dirt can build up. Some curtains can be placed directly in the washer and dryer to remove dirt, but removing them and putting them back can be a hassle, especially if you have to iron them (and washing curtains is often a no-no). It might be easier with a vacuum cleaner.
The trick is to get enough suction to clean the drapes and drapes, but not so much that your vacuum sucks them off the rod into the bag. Use the adjustment wheel on the hose handle to get the right amount of suction to clean the curtains.
Vacuum your furniture
Most vacuum accessory kits come with a soft brush for vacuuming hard surfaces like tables and shelves. You can use these regularly throughout the year, but for spring cleaning, you will need to remove the books and items from the shelf, vacuum or books, vacuum and replace the items.
Although you probably dust carefully throughout the year, during spring cleaning, you will notice that dust has settled between books and knickknacks on or behind them.
You can also use this handy accessory to dust off picture frames, mirrors, and other household items. Pop it off the end of the extension to easily vacuum baseboards, chair arms and wainscoting without bending.
